| Relationship Development
Intervention (RDI)® was developed by Steven Gutstein,
Ph.D., and Rachelle Sheely, Ph.D., of the Connections Center
in Houston, Texas.
RDI® is a recent treatment approach based on extensive
research and studies of individuals in the autism spectrum
that provides parents with tools to address their child’s
deficits.
RDI® is a multi-stage developmental model that builds
on areas of competency, proficiency, and resilience in an
ever changing world. This is a family-based system to empower
families with the skills to assist their child.
RDI® also:
- Assists with developing social referencing and understanding
the emotions of others.
- Supports the development of reciprocal language and friendships.
- Encourages more give and take and increases more fluid
thinking.
- Goes to the core deficits of autism: rigid thinking, aversion
to change, inability to understand others’ perspectives,
and absolute and concrete thinking.
- Helps decrease behavioral problems and increase spontaneous
language.
